Mathematics

Mathematics

Using the internationally acclaimed Singapore Math curriculum and pacing to the ability level of each student, Cyprus students out-perform nearly all schools in the nation in math on standardized tests.  As a school, Cyprus is well over the 99th percentile for MAP scores in all grade levels.

Each child is placed in classes which match their ability and achievement levels.  These classes are appropriately paced for the students in attendance.  Students work at their level, which could mean one or several years beyond their grade level,  and with other students who are near their age and ability level.  We use curriculum compacting as well as accelerated pacing in order to keep students challenged.

K and 1st Grade Level
For our students taking kindergarten and first grade levels of math, we use a curriculum which emphasizes computation and high level reasoning.  A very strong foundation with fluency in computation is crucial for the pace at which gifted students will be learning as they progress through higher levels of math.  Students worke one-on-one with an instructor to ensure accurate pacing.

2nd Grade through Pre-Algebra
Singapore Math
In an effort to provide the best mathematics instruction available to elementary aged students, Cyprus has completed extensive research on many major math curricula.  Our findings pointed overwhelmingly to one curriculum:  Singapore Math.

TIMSS, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, is designed to help countries all over the world improve student learning in mathematics and science. It collects educational achievement data at the fourth and eighth grades to provide information about trends in performance over time together with extensive background information to address concerns about the quantity, quality, and content of instruction.

Singapore is a recognized leader in mathematics achievement. Singaporean students ranked first in the world on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study-1991, 1995, 1999 and 2003, while U.S. students ranked 16th out of the 46 participating nations. Scores for U.S. students were among the lowest of all industrialized countries.  Singaporean students who took these tests used the Primary Math series, which is the series currently used by Cyprus Classical Academy.  Singapore’s textbooks build deep understanding of mathematical concepts while traditional U.S. textbooks rarely get beyond definitions and formulas.

Cyprus offers ability-based (rather than age or grade based) classes using Singapore Math up through Pre-Algebra.  Students are challenged at whatever level they are currently working, and continually reassessed to make sure they are moving forward at an appropriate pace for their ability.

Advanced Pre-Algebra and Beyond
Prentice Hall Accelerated Pre-Algebra, Prentice Hall Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2
Blitzer Pre-Calculus, Prentice Hall Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic Calculus

Many of our students reach high school levels of math very early. For these students, we use nationally recognized curriculum for high school Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus.  Students at  Cyprus also are able to take math at college levels, as needed.

Students who graduated into 9th grade from Cyprus took the following math courses in 9th grade at local high schools:
Honors Algebra II
Honors Pre-Calculus
AP Calculus BC
UMTYMP Calculus

ACT Math scores:  We consistently see ACT scores over 30 in math from our 6th and 7th graders on the ACT.
